About the Author

Hi, I’m Phil Davies, the co-founder of ArtTutor.com. I've compiled this list of drawing ideas to save you time and frustration. The suggestions are all chosen from artist's perspective that I know will make great sketches or full blown drawings. I'll definitely be having a go at some of these, both for my own sketchbook and for ArtTutor video lessons.

It's not just any old list...

101 very specific ideas, chosen by an artist with other artists in mind (inspiring, precise suggestions that don't require lots of guesswork).

Links to over 150 carefully selected, high-quality reference photos that are in the public domain and that will make great sketches (no need to ask for permission or credit the source).

A 7-day drawing challenge of subjects and sketchbook exercises that I've chosen for you, designed to improve your drawing abilities across a range of subject matter.

The problem with other sketching 'idea' lists

I created this list out of my frustration looking for new ideas for ArtTutor lessons...

I was spending hours every week sifting through Pinterest, Instagram and art books for inspiration. Then I realised I should just Google 'drawing and sketching ideas'.

What I found were several lists complied by other art instructors and even a drawing idea generator. But they weren't much use...

They either listed very boring, stereotypical objects ('draw a piece of fruit')... or things that I'd have to go and find reference for ('draw an eagle').

And then you get the lists of creative ideas ('draw your hand made of robot parts'). Challenges like that can be tricky, require research or a lot of brain power ('a carnivorous alien plant life').

This list is different.

It gives you very specific suggestions with links to reference photos (copyright free) where needed.

And because I'm an artist, I know what subjects will make great sketches and what won't. I know which photos are great to work from and which will make your drawing life difficult and tedious!

This list will save you time and mental energy, so that you can get on making great artwork for your portfolio!
